Bill Nye, Bernie Sanders Talk Climate Change, Alien Life On Other Planets

When advertising his upcoming conversation with Bill Nye, Bernie Sanders mentioned that although there is a “climate denier in the White House and plenty more in the cabinet and Congress,” we can still make progress transforming the energy system away from fossil fuels toward clean energy, and create jobs and an economic boost in the process. As reported by Mediaite, In a Facebook post before the live event, Bernie Sanders wrote the following. “We must move to protect our planet for future generations by transforming our energy system and in the process create good-paying jobs for millions of Americans.” Bernie Sanders and Bill Nye Offer Hope—and Horror—In Climate Change Discussion — Big Story (@BuzzStandard) February 27, 2017 In a live Facebook event that took place today, February 27, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders spoke with science icon Bill Nye “the science guy” about the effects of Global Warming on the world. Sanders began the conversation by discussing the current state of our government, with President Donald Trump as our Commander and Chief. “We have a President of the United States who thinks that climate change is a hoax emanating from China. What are the short and long term implications of a president who has that view?” During the live event, Bill Nye spoke about the Solutions Project, whose main mission is to transition to 100 percent clean and renewable energy for everyone and all purposes. Nye has determined that every other minute, President Trump contradicts himself. President Trump has declared numerous times that creating American jobs are a top priority. Bill Nye claimed that, if we chose to power the United States with renewable energy, it would be a huge opportunity from an economic standpoint. Even if the blades for the wind turbines were made in other countries, constructing and erecting turbines would create an enormous number of U.S. jobs. Bernie Sanders asked Bill Nye about science in general. According to Nye, the data behind science is settled. He claimed that news stations who dispute the existence of Global Warming, such as Fox News, cross the line. They are doing the American people a disservice. Fox News is Certain that Climate Change is a Hoax and Will Smear Anybody Disagrees – #globalwarming #climatechange — Global Warming mag. (@GlobalWarmingM) February 24, 2017 Nye also stated that anchors who report such extreme skepticism know better and are probably just going along with the position of the station. He went on to say that such denial can be likened to the large companies who once claimed that cigarettes didn’t cause cancer, even though the scientific facts are overwhelming. Bernie Sanders and Bill Nye spoke about the tar sands, and the immense damage the fight over the oil has caused to the natural environment that surrounds it. Nye expressed how disappointed he was to see the vast destruction, which seemingly has no end as it is viewed from a helicopter. [Image by Chris Kolaczan/Shutterstock] Bill Nye and Bernie Sanders talk about Tar Sands. Many individuals are concerned that wind turbines will kill birds. However, Bill Nye and Bernie Sanders spoke about the cannons surrounding the tar sands, meant to scare the birds away from the toxicity of the land that surrounds the area. If you want to kill birds, says Nye, coal-fired electricity plants are the way to go. Wind Turbines… But what about the birds…?
“Well if you want to kill birds fossil fuels is the way to go!”
–@BillNye w/ @BernieSanders — Brian R (@SrgntBallistic) February 27, 2017 Using the psychology term cognitive dissonance, Bill Nye likened the Americans who believe President Trump is correct in his “extreme denial of Global Warming” to Aesop’s tale about a fox and grapes. Bill Nye claimed that fossil fuels have a huge impact. He hopes that when people see the light, they will look at the world in a different way and be on the side of natural, renewable energy. Bernie Sanders asked Nye what would happen to the planet if we refuse to see the truth? Nye stated that we build sea walls and parks to avoid effects, such as those from Hurricane Sandy. We spend billions of dollars in the developed world to avoid these effects, and all the while, millions of people who live in the still developing parts of the world are displaced. People default on their mortgages and leave. Millions of people migrate to a safer location but have nothing to eat. Bill Nye went on to disclose that many known climate scientists are discovering a lot of unrest in the middle east. Individuals there, due to lack of rain, no longer want to stay and work the family farms. There is no profit without the rain that makes the plants grow. Nye hypothesizes that these individuals migrate to the big cities, and when they cannot find jobs, they join terrorist organizations. He further suggests that building turbines would provide jobs for these individuals, thereby keeping them out of dangerous situations. Nye made the claim that fossil fuel companies would be even richer if they were to get on board with natural energy. He then suggested that individuals can conserve energy in small ways at home by insulating an attic or installing double or triple paned windows. Bernie Sanders agreed that new windows are a long-term investment that will pay off in the short term. Electric cars are decreasing in price, and Nye mentioned that he hopes to see a day when all ground travel is transitioned to electric. [Image by Arindambanerjee/Shutterstock] Bill Nye and Sanders Talk About Clean Energy A self-proclaimed patriot who was born and raised in the United States, Bill Nye wishes to see the U.S. become a leader in the innovative technology that would harness the natural energy. He believes that the same technology used for mobile phones could be used to distribute electricity, and electricity on a large scale has to be “managed in new and cool ways.” He went on to say that if you “hate the government, make your own electricity.” Sanders and Nye changed the conversation to science in general. Nye mentioned that scientists are under immense pressure, and are concerned about their data being erased or reviewed. Their jobs are being attacked, and some scientists have been attacked personally. Science, according to Nye, holds the key to the future of humanity. In fact, Nye mentioned that the U.S. has previously led the world in the space race. This year, China will launch more rockets. Nye believes that the federal budget should be spent on space exploration. Scientists learning about nature and space is a far better investment than building nuclear weapons. “Finding evidence of life on another planet will change the course of human history,” says Nye. At the very least, detecting meteors and finding a way to deflect them will save the existence of mankind. If we ever make contact w aliens @BillNye is the head of the organization that would handle that situation and i just think thats so fitting — alan (@nalanospmis) January 31, 2017 [Featured Image by J. 89th Academy Awards: O.J. Simpson Documentary Win Is Important, Here's Why

The O.J. Simpson murder trial was deemed the trial of the century back in 1995 when the now infamous ex-football star was acquitted of the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman. Last year, a whole new generation became fascinated with the proceedings all over again through an FX miniseries American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson and the five-part documentary O.J.: Made In America. Both went on to gain critical acclaim and last night, the nearly eight-hour film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The film’s win was both well deserved and a big political statement that far proceeds the ceremony itself. As The Telegraph reported, the complete shutout of any racial diversity of last year’s Oscars nominations did not sit well with the general public. But, the fact that a documentary taking on these very problematic racial divides can win in a major category signaled a much needed improvement this year. Director Ezra Edelman and Producer Caroline Waterlow accept Academy Award. [Image by Kevin Winter/Getty Images] The documentary explores the history of race relations in American society through the events preceding, during and directly after Simpson’s trial. It brilliantly dissects the early life of O.J. to highlight how he became the first mainstream African-American to be fully embraced and adored by white society. However, he never spoke out about heated racial tensions that existed at the time, and being a voice for the often voiceless black population was not something he tackled. As reflected in the film, he would often combat this by saying, “I’m not black, I’m O.J!” In addition, the majority of friends and celebrities he associated himself with were white. Then, when he was charged in the brutal murders of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman, everything changed. Suddenly the man who seemed to reject classifications of race was at the center of one of the most racially heated and tense trials in American history. Suddenly, “The Juice” was dependent on the very race he had long distanced himself from to set him free. To this day, the words “not guilty” in this trial still resonate with many people around the world. While the majority of the African-American community were overjoyed by the outcome, many others (predominately white) were not so sure of his innocence in this case. The racial divide over the verdict had long-term ramifications to the point were the debate over his involvement in the murders is still heated today. OJ Simpson at a Las Vegas hearing in 2008, where he was convicted of kidnapping, and assault with a deadly weapon in a Las Vegas hotel room. [Image by Isaac Brekken-Pool/Getty Images] Overall, the five-part documentary is a candid look into the racial tensions of that time. Much like back then, there is still a large amount of racial divide within mainstream society. Most notably, police brutality against members of the African-American race has gained much media coverage in recent years. Because this was a major topic within the film (specifically the police beating of black civilian Rodney King in the early 1990’s which set the stage for the racial divide in the OJ trial), the director even made sure to dedicate the Oscar win to victims of police violence, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In the quick but powerful acceptance speech, director Ezra Edelman stated that the win was for victims of “police violence, police brutality, racially-motivated violence and criminal injustice”, all major talking points included in the documentary. Having a film that addressed this hot-topic against the backdrop of the most infamous trial of all-time is a much needed breath of fresh air for the Academy Awards. The director also dedicated the film and win to the two murder victims Nicole and Ron and their families. It’s a very positive sign that the film was triumphant last night, at least partially making up for the fact that there was no sense of diversity last year with an list of all-white nominees. Perhaps the win will even drive more people to watch the educational, fascinating and definitely riveting documentary. Viewers may expect to tune in to simply watch a rundown of the infamous murder trial, but are given so much more in the form of racial and social commentary. As The LA Times reports, the film has also broken a new record: it is now the longest ever film to win an Academy Award with a 467-minute run time. Currently, OJ is serving a minimum nine-year sentence in an unrelated kidnapping and assault case in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2007. Previously reported by Inquisitr, he could be released on parole later this year. [Featured Image by Ethan Miller/Getty Images]

Free Press Protestors Defend The New York Times, NBC, And Fox News

Sunday morning, free press defenders marched from The New York Times Manhatten offices to Fox News, past The Wall Street Journal, and NBC’s headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Many people wore tape over their mouths to protest President Trump’s treatment of mainstream media organizations and a recent ban of popular news outlets, including The New York Times, at a recent White House briefing. [Image by Kathy Willens/AP Images] President Donald Trump, who has long been a vocal critic of the mainstream press, especially The New York Times and CNN, increased his Twitter attacks on long-established news outlets starting on February 17th: “The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @CNN, @NBCNews and many more) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American people. SICK!” Trump’s Tweet was quickly deleted, according to Politico, and replaced with more news organizations the President didn’t approve of: “The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!” The Twitter attacks on the mainstream media continued on February 24, with President Trump not backing down from his belief that the press or “Fake News Media” are dangerous to our country: “FAKE NEWS media knowingly doesn’t tell the truth. A great danger to our country. The failing @nytimes has become a joke. Likewise @CNN. Sad!” Although Trump’s Twitter storm was provocative to every American who supports the First Amendment’s protection of a free press, many were not motivated to protest until after the President decided on Friday to bar several news outlets from a standard White House briefing. Organizations banned from the briefing include The New York Times, the BBC, BuzzFeed News, CNN, Politico, and The Huffington Post. News organizations allowed into Friday’s briefing included traditionally conservative outlets including Breitbart News, The Washington Times, and the One America News Network. [Image by Kathy Willens/AP Images] According to the New York Times, Sunday’s protests were planned by Get Organized BK, New York City Council Member Brad Lander’s progressive organization to resist the Trump agenda. Although the march began and ended at The New York Times, the organizers made it very clear that the protest supported all media outlets, regardless of political leanings or bias. Chants heard at Sunday’s protest included: “When The New York Times is under attack what do we do?” “STAND UP FIGHT BACK” One protestor held a sign with a recent quote from Senator John McCain (R), which stated: “When you look at history, the first thing dictators do is shut down the press.”
In a February 18th interview on Meet the Press, moderator Chuck Todd asked Senator McCain his opinion of President Trumps assumption that the United States press is the enemy of the American people. The Senator responded with both serious support of a strong, independent press and a bit of lighthearted humor: “A fundamental part of that new world order was a free press. I hate the press. I hate you especially. But the fact is we need you.” And later clarified: “And I’m not saying that President Trump is trying to be a dictator. I’m just saying we need to learn the lessons of history.” Regardless of protests, fellow Republican’s support of a free press and Constitutional protections, President Trump’s self-inflicted war with the media has escalated since he took office. In response, Dean Baquet, the executive editor of The New York Times, expressed his support of the protestors saying that Trump’s actions to ban the press: “Undermines one of the few institutions that has as its role asking tough, independent-minded questions of the president.” [Featured Image by Kathy Willens/AP Images]

Donald Trump: United States Navy SEALs Dad Tells POTUS Don't Hide Behind My Son

Donald Trump and United States Navy SEALs dad William Owens are at odds over a failed raid that killed the Special Forces operative, with the fallen seaman’s father claiming that Trump has used his son’s death as a publicity stunt, the Miami Herald is reporting. On January 28 — just days into Donald Trump’s administration — the Navy SEALS carried out a raid on a target in Yemen, according to a New York Times report from the time. The raid was supposed to be a quick operation; commandos were to grab some computers and other devices believed to contain sensitive information, then be gone in an instant. DON’T BLAME #TRUMP FOR #YEMEN | Anatomy of a Failed Raid. Me, in @souciantmag @ionacraig @gregorydjohnsen — Bilal Zenab Ahmed (@pakistanarchy) February 17, 2017 Instead, however, “everything” went wrong, and what was to be a quick in-and-out turned into an hour-long firefight. When the dust was settled, several Americans and Yemenis were wounded, and several Yemeni women and children were killed. Also killed was one American Navy SEAL: William “Ryan” Owens. “I WANT AN INVESTIGATION”: Father of Navy SEAL killed in Yemen raid demands probe after refusing to meet with Trump — New York Daily News (@NYDailyNews) February 26, 2017 Owens’ father, Bill, was at home in the Miami suburbs when he heard the knock on the door that every military parent dreads. A few hours later, Bill and a few family members were at Dover Air Force base to receive the flag-draped casket containing the body of his son. Ordinarily, such things are attended by military dignitaries, sometimes even the president himself. And in this particular case, President Trump, as well as wife Melania and daughter Ivanka, were also there. Bill Owens wanted no part of that. He told the military chaplain on duty that he would prefer that Trump and his family stay in another room while he mourned his son. “I’m sorry, I don’t want to see him. I told them I don’t want to meet the President.” #RyanOwens‘ Dad after failed #YemenRaid: “I don’t want to meet the President.” — #ResistanceNews (@LadyLiberty411) February 26, 2017 Owens wants an investigation. Specifically, he wants to know why Trump sent in commandos when U.S. operations had been carried out by drone strikes and other remote warfare up until the failed raid that killed his son. “Why at this time did there have to be this stupid mission when it wasn’t even barely a week into his administration? Why? For two years prior, there were no boots on the ground in Yemen — everything was missiles and drones — because there was not a target worth one American life. Now, all of a sudden we had to make this grand display?” The Trump administration, for its part, calls the raid a success and insists that anyone who criticizes it dishonors Ryan Owens’ memory — a claim which Bill Owens rejects. “Don’t hide behind my son’s death to prevent an investigation. I want an investigation…. The government owes my son an investigation.” The White House, however, pointed out that the Department of Defense always carries out an investigation, as a matter of course, whenever a military operation results in casualties. In a statement made available via CNN, White House spokesman Michael Short insisted that Ryan Owens merely did his part to keep America safe. “The mission he participated in yielded valuable intelligence in the ongoing fight against radical Islamic terrorism. The United States is safer today thanks to his bravery and years of faithful service in uniform. We will be forever in his debt.” Do you believe that Donald Trump is using U.S. Navy SEAL Ryan Owens’ death as a cover for his administration’s failings in the botched Yemen raid? El Chapo Getting A Shady Visit From An Actress, Despite Government Warnings

El Chapo, the infamous drug kingpin of the modern era, is in a high-security prison in New York and, according to a previous report from The Inquisitr, is receiving some very harsh treatment. That does not mean, though, that Mr. Chapo (whose actual name is Joaquin Guzman) does not still get visits from beautiful Mexican actresses once in a while. Just such a visit is happening within the next few months, says El Chapo’s attorney, even though it has previously been expressly forbidden by the Mexican government. The purpose of the visit is to facilitate a meeting between El Chapo Guzman and well-connected Mexican actress Kate del Castillo regarding a very edgy biopic of El Chapo’s life and legacy. Kate del Castillo [Image by Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images] Mirror is the only other English-language source so far to report that Del Castillo will be flown to Manhattan’s Metoplolitan Correctional Center, where El Chapo is being held. “I am his lawyer and we cannot organize anything,” Mirror reports El Chapo’s attorney said in an interview with Spanish-language newspaper Basta. “Miss Kate del Castillo is the person who will do it.” He added that the meeting will probably take place in August. The article does not specify exactly why Del Castillo is the one making the visit, but a little digging into her past reveals what is probably the reason: she has ties, or at least a strong allegiance, to El Chapo. In early 2016, Del Castillo managed to set up an interview between Sean Penn and El Chapo, despite the fact that, at the time, El Chapo was a free man. The reasons for and repercussions of the interview are discussed by The Guardian, and the Youtube video of the interview itself can be viewed below. Just the fact that Del Castillo was able to locate and set up an interview with El Chapo shows she has connections to the man and his organization. She undoubtedly knew the Mexican government, who was ruthlessly searching for Guzman at the time, would be none too happy about her heavily publicized meeting with him either — indeed, she did get in a lot of legal trouble for “aiding and abetting” the fugitive. And that shows she values her relationship with El Chapo more so than her relationship with the Mexican authorities, an idea she essentially confirmed during her much more recent interview reported by Mirror. “I am still having legal problems in Mexico,” Del Castillo reportedly told Basta. “I have always been very open, direct and I have always talked about the things that bother me or that hurt me a lot in Mexico. Now I am much stronger. I feel I have more strength in order to raise my voice.” The El Chapo biopic has apparently been in the works for a while, and the Mexican government is, not surprisingly, fairly resistant to the idea. In fact, The Hollywood Reporter relayed in early 2016, the authorities actually sent a letter to Del Castillo ordering her to halt work on the project. The letter may have given her pause on pressing forward with her El Chapo-focused effort, but the recent words from her attorney and Del Castillo herself are a clear sign that things are finally moving forward. Coinciden de nuevo Kate del Castillo y ‘El Chapo’ vía #EXPRESO — Elsa Johnston (@JohnstonElsa) February 9, 2017 The project itself (it is not known yet whether it will be a film or a series) should be very edgy, as it looks like it will provide a more authentic and sympathetic version of El Chapo’s rise to full-fledged icon than anything yet seen. The facts that El Chapo himself is being consulted so closely about the project and that Del Castillo, who is obviously important to the project, is an ally of El Chapo more than likely indicate that conclusion, at least. We don’t know any more about the biopic as of yet, but it looks like it’s shaping up to be something pretty exciting. VP Mike Pence Tweets Wrong Flag When Pledging Commitment to Jews And Israel

Between his trip to the St. Louis Jewish cemetery that was damaged by anti-Semitic vandalism, and his speech at the Republican Jewish Coalition meeting, Vice President Mike Pence is trying his best to prove that the Jewish community has the support of the Trump administration. Trump, and certain members of his cabinet have been called out for not mentioning the loss of Jewish life when talking about the Holocaust, so Mike Pence has been sent out on an apology tour, which instead became a bit of a face-palm when he used the Nicaraguan flag rather than the Israeli flag when he pledged his and Trump’s support for Israel and the Jewish people. Mike Pence has often been put out front of a variety of topics by the Trump administration to take some of the knocks by the opposition, says the Inquisitr. Just after the election, Pence did a foreshadowing of many contentious topics, like protecting employers who do not want to insure employees for things like birth control and abortion, which are contrary to their personal religious beliefs. Pence also said that he and Donald Trump supported removing the protection for LGBT students to choose the bathroom that suited their particular gender identification, rather than the bathroom that matched the gender on their birth certificate. In the defense of Mike Pence, Israel and Nicaragua have similar coloration, but the big and obvious difference is the Star of David in the center of the Israel flag, whereas the flag of Nicaragua has the national coat of arms, which looks nothing like the Jewish star. America loves the poorly educated in the age of Google. @mike_pence @VP uses a Nicaraguan flag for Israel in tweets. — Scott Spencer (@bullriders1) February 25, 2017 After the Mike Pence mis-tweets, that were to accompany his speech at the Republican Jewish Coalition, where Pence declared his unequivocal support for Israel, it was made clear that it was a staffer, and not Pence himself who screwed up. The two tweets were each highlighted with the Nicaraguan flag. “WATCH LIVE my remarks to Republican Jewish Coalition. Under “POTUS Trump we will stand with Israel.” And “Our support for the Jewish people doesn’t end at our nation’s border. Under “POTUS, the world will know America stands with Israel.” After his speech at the Republican Jewish Coalition, Pence attended perhaps his first Jewish Shabbat dinner. Pence made it clear that he and Trump would continue to combat the on-going bias against Israel by the United Nations. “We’re going to keep our end of the bargain. If the world knows nothing else, the world will know this: America stands with Israel.” And while neither the White House nor Pence didn’t comment on the international political gaff, Twitter was alive with comments, where people metaphorically scratched their heads, wondering how such a mistake could be made twice. And while the oops was removed (not corrected to feature the Israel flag, which does have its own emoji), in the age of screen shots, the Pence error will live forever. “America loves the poorly educated in the age of Google. @mike_pence @VP uses a Nicaraguan flag for Israel in tweets.” “Betsy Devos must’ve taught Mike Pence about geography bc that’s definitely the flag for Nicaragua, not Israel.” “Please say #MikePence, the new VP, did NOT Tweet the flag of Nicaragua instead of Israel by accident?? He did? Unfortunate, unfortunate.” The Chicago Tribune said that Pence also did an apology tour overseas, visiting Nazi concentration camps, and mollifying foreign powers after statements from Trump got them riled up. Trump, who reportedly prefers to stay in the United States, and not travel, beyond the New York, DC, and Mir-a-lago circuit that he makes almost weekly. But many are asking why Mike Pence is being sent to fix things that he did not break, and if foreign leaders can trust what Pence has to say. Many Israel supporters were alarmed when Netanyahu came to visit, and Donald Trump didn’t seem to know the meaning of a one-state or two-state solution, but Nikki Haley and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has sought to clean up that mess, speaking for Trump, and saying that of course, a two-state solution is being sought between Israel and Palestine. But many European leaders, like Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid, found the manner of VP Mike Pence soothing in comparison to President Trump, and Pence assured them if they didn’t want to connect with Trump, they could call him. “He was very understanding, very friendly, and told us that if we ever have any problems we should call. He said if you don’t want to call the president, you can always call me.” Ignorance & incompetence of this regime is mind-boggling. pence tweets support for Israel with wrong flag. #unfit — Patti Kimble #Resist (@PattiKimble) February 26, 2017 Do you think that the Pence public gaffs will lessen after Donald Trump has been in office a few months? He’s still single and if Ashley Iaconetti is invited back again, there’s no doubt Jared will be tempted to return to Paradise to see if he can finally find love without Ashley having a breakdown. “No. No, no, no, no. This is my last Bachelor show. Another reason I wanted to go on was because I knew if I went on, this is it. I’m very happy that I went on, and this is absolutely my last show with the Bachelor franchise. Unfortunately, I hate saying that because I love the people that work here.” Chad Johnson [Image by ABC Television Network] One contestant who didn’t get to stay in Paradise for more than an episode will reportedly be back for another shot at stirring up drama this summer. It looks like things are going to get all “murdery” all over again. Chad Johnson tells Us Weekly that ABC has invited him back to the show and he’s only watching Nick’s season so he can figure out which ladies he’d like to meet in Paradise. And when it comes to other previous contestants, it won’t be a shocker to see Vinny return to the show, but what about Josh Murray and Amanda Stanton? Although they broke up earlier this year, they were recently spotted Who else will fans see on Bachelor in Paradise Season 4? Count on seeing some of the other contestants from Nick’s season as well. Names in the rumor mill include Liz Sandoz, Kristina Schulman, Alexis Waters, and Taylor Nolan. And let’s not forget about some of the guys from JoJo Fletcher’s season. In addition to Chad, be on the lookout for some of the guys who didn’t make it to Paradise last summer including Robby Hayes, James Taylor McCoy, Chase McNary, and Luke Pell. All four men have been spending a whole lot of time on social media, so it’s clear they are trying to stay in the spotlight. Of course, there’s a whole slew of guys who may show up in Paradise this summer who we have yet to meet. When Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay meets the 25 guys vying for her heart this spring, expect to see several of them cast for Bachelor in Paradise – or at least the two men who don’t make it to the final rose ceremony. New York Police And Mayor Bill de Blasio Blame Hate Crime Surge On Donald Trump

The New York Police have noticed a surge in hate crimes and have placed the blame for this on President Donald Trump, with Mayor Bill de Blasio saying that the increase in hate crimes is because of Trump’s rhetoric. There have been skyrocketing hate crimes over the past few months in New York, with much of it on Jewish people. Stephen Davis, the NYPD spokesman, has said that he can only conclude that the recent increase in hate crimes is because of President Trump’s campaign, as Huffington Post reported. “Based on the timing and the extraordinary increase we’ve been seeing, not only in New York but around the nation, you have to conclude that the presidential campaign was the major factor.” The surge in hate crimes in New York has increased 42 percent from this same time last year, with 143 reported incidents. Out of these hate crimes, which come from police department statistics, 72 percent of the hate crimes directly targeted Jews, and this number has risen dramatically from the 39 percent which was reported last year. [Image by Spencer Platt/Getty Images] Some of these hate crimes in New York which have been blamed on Donald Trump include criminal mischief, harassment and what are called “terroristic threats.” At the start of February, for instance, Jews were targeted in Borough Park, Brooklyn when swastikas were traced over snow on the cars of residents parked in the New York neighborhood. Metro News reported that the City Councilman David Greenfield was horrified by this anti-Semitic hate crime and found himself “truly disgusted that on snow day some would try and strike fear in the heart of Jewish NYC.” While hate crimes in the state of New York were previously on the decline and averaged roughly 15 per month, Governor Andrew Cuomo has said that since the election of President Trump those numbers have doubled. Members of the LGBT and Muslim communities have also been on the receiving end of threats. Because of this, Cuomo has said that the state would be allotting $25 million for additional security which will include surveillance technology and training everywhere from day care centers to schools that he feels may be at risk, particularly those that are affiliated with religion. There will also be a Hate Crimes Text Line so that hate crimes can be reported with greater ease in the future. Governor Andrew Cuomo has made it very clear that perpetrators of hate crimes will not be accepted or tolerated in the state of New York. “Any acts of bias or discrimination will be met with the full force of the law.” James O’Neill, the NYPD Commissioner, noticed that after President Trump’s election that there was a major increase in the report of hate crimes and suggested that perhaps it was due to the rhetoric of Trump’s campaign. “I have no scientific evidence as to why, but you’ve been paying attention to what’s been going on in the country over the last year or so, and the rhetoric has increased, and I think that might have something to do with it.” LGBT protesters in New York on February 23, 2017. Donald Trump Polls: Approval Rating Hits Record Low Amid Growing Russia Scandal

Donald Trump has seen a historic dip in the polls, with the president’s quickly expanding Russia scandal leading to a record low in approval ratings. A poll this weekend from NBC News/Wall Street Journal found that just 44 percent of those surveyed approve of Trump’s performance to date, while 48 percent disapprove. As NBC News noted, no other president has fallen so far in polls so quickly. “Trump begins his tenure in a dramatically less popular position than any of his predecessors,” the outlet noted. “He is the only president in the history of modern polling to begin his first term with a net negative approval rating — and it’s not close.” As the report went on to add, most other presidents have seen high ratings early on in their first term, a honeymoon of sorts when Americans are more willing to give them a chance. “Compared to Trump’s net negative rating of -4 percent, Barack Obama began his presidency with a net positive 34 percent; George W. Bush and Bill Clinton enjoyed a similar advantage, and George H.W. Bush’s score of popular goodwill pushed even higher to a net positive of 45 percent.” There is still a chance that Donald Trump’s poll numbers could sink even lower. As Cook Political Report analyst Amy Walter noted on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, Trump was never exactly a popular candidate, so he comes in lacking the political capital of other presidents. “A whole bunch of people voted for this president, not because they liked him, not because they condoned his behavior, but because they thought that he was going to be able to make a difference. You’re not going to know that in 30 days,” Walter said (via the Christian Science Monitor). Poll: Trump approval rating hits record low — The Hill (@thehill) February 26, 2017 While his overall poll numbers are sinking, Donald Trump remains popular among Republican voters. The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found that 85 percent of Republicans favored Trump’s performance compared to 34 percent of independents and 9 percent of Democrats. It’s not just the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll where Donald Trump’s poll numbers are sinking, the Christian Science Monitor found. “Overall, Trump’s job approval numbers aren’t positive. As of Monday, 44.6 percent of voters approve of what he’s doing as president, according to the RealClearPolitics average of major surveys. His disapproval is 50.5. That nets out to a negative 5.9 percent, an unprecedentedly low rating for someone who’s only been in office a few weeks.” Donald Trump’s dip in the polls came amid a series of scandals for the controversial president. There remains the lingering question of his campaign’s possible contact with Russia during the 2016 campaign, and this week a New York Times report claimed American intelligence officials intercepted a number of contacts between Trump’s campaign and Russian intelligence officials. They could not conclude if Trump’s team had any involvement in the email leaks from Russia meant to hurt Hillary Clinton’s campaign, the report noted. Another report from CNN claimed that White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus asked the FBI to speak to reporters and publicly deny an investigation. The FBI reportedly denied the request, which CNN noted was against long-established rules creating separation between the FBI and White House. There are increasing calls on Congress to form a bipartisan investigation of Trump, with even Republican Darrell Issa calling for an investigation.
